When I booted up this morning I noticed a tiny circle on the
screen just above the speaker symbol.
It is half the size of a match stick & even though I hovered over it
I can't remove it or discover what it is.
Being an absolute technophobe I am hoping it is not sinister.
I ran Malwarebytes with no issues thrown up.

Any advice please as I am a worrier.
Thanks.

Unsure. Not got it on mute or something then ? Open up the audio control window and see if a setting can account for it.

Thanks but it doesn't seem to be that.
The other odd thing is that even if I close down it is still there until
the last thing.

There is some sort of logo inside the circle but even with a magnifying
glass it is too tiny to read.
A picture may help someone recognise it.
Question Author
Thanks again but I don't know how to take a picture.
You have a print screen (PreScn) key that will put it in the paste buffer. You then paste that into, for example, a paint programme and save it to your drive.

Then you find a hosting site to register with and upload that picture file to it.

Then you can post a link to that picture file in your thread.

Thanks for your patience - I'll try.

You're not such an Old_Geezer are you!
Some days I feel centuries old.
Meanwhile, who knows, someone may recognise your description anyway.
Run Msconfig to see what is running on startup something may give you a clue as to what it is
What equipment has the screen. Is it a Laptop, Desktop, Tablet or whatever.?

A note of make and model would also help.

If the circle has a line diagonally across it, it might be indicating that your speakers are muted.

Hans.

Thanks Bertrum but unfortunately nothing was revealed.

Hans

It is an Acer Aspire 7540 series laptop.
The speakers do not appear to be muted.
You have said that you have hovered the mouse over it, but have you actually done a right click onto it, to see if a menu appears.

I admit to being at a loss to think what the circle means or how it got there, but have been searching the internet to see if I can get any clues.

Hans.

Thanks for your efforts Hans.

I did right click but nothing appears.
I'll probably do what I always in these cases - ignore it and pretend
it is just something inexplicable.
When this happens on mine, it means that my speaker/volume is on mute.
Question Author
Sorry Quoi you weren't there when I replied to Hans

The speaker symbol is the second one in your question.
Question Author
Thanks janbee.

Just to be sure I played some music from Youtube with no problem.
Computers/Laptops are strange animals. Sometime, disconnecting all cables to them and removing batteries, if possible, then leaving for Half an hour and then re-connecting everything, is enough to correct faults which have developed.

You may consider trying a complete shutdown with all cables disconnected or even contacting Acer as indicated in the following link:-

Hans.
If it's working okay, ignore :)
Question Author
Thanks again Hans.

I did as you suggested and disconnected everything - but no joy.
