Have downloaded windows10 onto a thumb drive. When I installed, it simply went to the C drive, where windows 8.1 is installed and simply installed itself there. I was under the impression that when the Windows 10 was preparing to install, I would be allowed to choose which drive/disk I would prefer.
So I have a new SSD with nothing on it!
My question is; How do I get 10 to put itself onto the SSD please?

Did you want Windows 10 to replace Windows 8 or work alongside it?

Note Windows 10 is only free if you upgrade from Windows 7 or 8 to W10.

And you need to do an upgrade FIRST as when you do Microsoft make a note of your hardware and store it on their servers with your activation code.

You cant do a "clean install" of Windows 10 first (before the upgrade) as you don't have the Windows 10 activation number.

Once you have done an upgrade THEN you can do a clean W10 install.

If you want to put W10 on any drive but C you need to select an option like "advanced options" (or words to that affect) on one of the install windows.

This is how it works on W7 but I have not done a W10 install yet so not sure if it works the same on W10.

Now you have done an upgrade then I assume you can now do a clean W10 install.
When you install from a thumb drive you will be asked if you want to upgrade your existing Windows installation or create a new one. If you choose two create a new installation, you'll be asked where you want to put it, and you can select the SSD. But your best option is to wait until the upgrade has been activated, at which point your machine will be registered on the MS activation servers, then remove the old drive, install the SSD and do a clean install, skip entering the key, and the clean installation should activate automatically, when your machine is recognised.
