I have already used my 15GB monthly allowance up in 2 weeks .I only normally use about 8Gb a month.I cannot understand why as i do not download or watch videos etc.Could something in the background be using a lot of data and if so how do I trace it. Thank you

One Drive is Microsoft's cloud storage. It means that all your files - documents, photos, music, videos etc - are backed up over the internet to secure drives elsewhere. This should be one big backup followed by regular little back ups of new files.

have you downloaded anything big like windows 10 and its updates
is you routers wireless being used by a neighbour ?
That's a heck of a lot of background data comms. Have you checked for malware ? What about updates, Windows/applications/mobile via WiFi ?

Is your router passworded ?
Has Windows 10 downloaded in the background?
If Windows 10 has downloaded itself it will have used about 4GB and then another similar amount when it installs. Very annoying isn't it?!

Windows 10 was already installed when I bought my laptop and there was recently an update..I use MiFi and only I know the password.
Interesting article about W10 here, possibly 'stealing' some data bandwidth and using your pc's storage for their own usage.

Hi whiston. Presuming that you are only connected to your hub wit your new laptop. No phones or printers etc. select the widows 4 panel icon bottom left on your screen. Select settings, Select Network and Internet, Select Data Usage. Select Usage details. W 10 has this built in.

Just another thought whiston. Upload and download will eat into your data allowance. I am on an unlimited data package so have not thought about it until I read your question. You will probably be sharing date in the background with windows ( which whilst being updated regularly, being new, may be considerable). You may want to again go to settings, Privacy, Feedback and Diagnostics, Then the Diagnostic and Usage panel. You can change this default setting to basic although Microsoft recommend full. This will cut your usage.
Just read alice's post and have saved her link I will have a look at that myself alice. LOL.

Thanks hc4361 now i know what happened to my usage.
//OneDrive has become an important part of Microsoft’s platform, and in Windows 10 it’s baked right into the operating system.//
// To change OneDrive settings, right-click the icon in the notification area, select Settings, switch to the Choose folders tab, and click the Choose folders button. You can either sync All files and folders on your OneDrive, or Choose folders to sync,//

One Drive is switched 'off' on my pc. I have no desire to have all my files or any part of them stored in the 'Cloud'. After all the 'fun and games' of other servers being hacked (ie Talk Talk etc) can you trust your files to anyone?

My backups are stored on my separate Backup drive.
I use external drives, too, but I have all my music and ebooks on the Cloud.
