I've been told by Orange that unless I buy their roaming package I will get charged more for any calls I make or receive and the same for texts.

Does this still apply for texts sent on iMessage and WhatsApp?

OK - it's simple - but not obvious. 1. To make sure you don't get charged for any calls or texts over the foreign mobile network - put the phone into airplane mode. As long as you are connected to wifi, there should be no charge for whassup.
...but if you are not connected to Wifi, any calls you make on WhatsApp are likely to cost you a fortune. If you are not going to by a roaming package, make sure you've turned off your data connection.

Thanks, the apartment has wifi, does that mean iMessage texts are free as well?
As TheChair says, just make sure your data roaming is Off.
Yes they are as as is Facetime.

Confused now, how do I turn off data connection?

1. To make sure you don't get charged for any calls or texts over the foreign mobile network - put the phone into airplane mode.

2. Then turn wifi back on and connect to your apartment's wifi (or the free wifi in a bar or cafe or whatever).

That's right Sunny, now I remember, that's what my sons told me to do to make sure. Put on Airplane Mode and switch back on wifi. Gives you a bit of peace also, not receiving any calls. It's usually only family and friends who call with WhatsApp and FaceTime.
