I have a laptop with a blu-ray enabled dvd drive. My o/s is Windows 8.1. Any advice on how to play commercially encrypted blu-ray dvds on my laptop would be gratefully received please. I recently downloaded the free version of VLC but it seems this otherwise versatile product cannot cope with encrypted dvds. Any suggestions gratefully received, thanks. S p.

Has this dvd played properly on any machine?
What about the region? Is it the right region for your player?
As hc4361 asks, because if your P/C has a Blu-Ray enabled DVD drive it should play as soon as you put the disc in without downloading any other software.
VLC can't natively support encrypted Blu-ray discs because of licensing issues. You can try patching it though:

However it's unusual for for a machine with a Blu-ray drive not to be supplied with suitable software (either on a disc or pre-loaded onto the computer). Are you sure that you've not got something like CyberLink’s PowerDVD or ArcSoft’s TotalMedia Theatre somewhere or other?

Thanks for your replies. My dvd drive is a replacement drive replacing one that gave up the ghost. It was fitted by a local techy where we used to live and I have since upgraded (if that is the right word) the o/s from Windows 7 to 8.1. This involved a complete reformat of C: Hope this explains why no blu-ray software. And, yes it is a local region disk bought in Tesco or some such place. Thanks again for taking trouble to respond.
What software did you use to play blu ray? It should have been supplied with the new dvd drive.
