just got a new laptop - literally a few days - and ive noticed every now and then it makes a funny little noise - almost like a little animal 'cheeping' or squeaking ... only 1 second .. any idea what it could be?

obviously i have a limited time to send it back under distance selling rules ... should i?
its only about say twice a day - but ive never heard it before - wondering if it is the dvd drive or something? im going to test that out now

any ideas?

thanks

Mouse?
A fan maybe ?
Could be one of the drives.
Can you turn off/mute the loudspeaker to ensure it's not your OS playing something ?
Could it be a notification sound of some kind? Such as someone logging it to Skype, message from Facebook or Twitter, disconnection of device...

thanks all,
no pretty sure its not a notification sound

theres no mouse attached

it seems like it is something moving and is catching perhaps? though it doesnt sound like a scrape, more something is being stopped? i guess its probably the drive - it seems like its coming from just under the screen - by the batt... not sure what else is in that section as the bottom is a solid piece
its a HP pavillion 15

maybe its just because its a new machine?
It shouldn't be making noises just because it's new - it doesn't bed down with use.

Have you done as OG suggested and muted the sound to see if that makes a difference?
Well if you are sure it is not coming from the loudspeaker there are few moving parts to make a noise. Fan hitting something or noisy bearings, & drives starting up mainly. Although transformers have been known to hum, not squeak though. Without disconnecting stuff it may be hard to pinpoint.

I'd recommend earplugs ;-)

it does seem to be coming from the general area of the dvd player - however i have sat with the dvd play tray out for over and hour now and it has made the noise twice.

there should be nothing moving in the dvd player if the tray is out - right?

its hard noise to describe, kind of a croaky squeak, quite quiet ...
Maybe it has a fault ? Maybe it is trying to open or close the tray, but failing.

thanks - yeah i wondered that - but my old laptop used to sometimes seem like it was 'firing' up the dvd drive but not actually doing anything - but the noise was 'obvious'

i have played a cd and it works fine

but it does 'kind of' sound like something is trying to start, or 'churn'... but the noise is literally a second long.
i wish i could play it to you, as its hard to describe

it kind of sounds like its coming from under the general area where the backspace button is

the laptop has 'beats audio' lettering on it ...
Well that's the warning then. Something inside is beating the audio.

lol, that sentance wasnt finished, i meant is it something to do with that? more power in it or something?
IMO unlikely. I'd ignore it until a genuine problem becomes evident, if it ever does.
