Problem With Windows 8.1 Mail App

I have two email addresses linked to my Windows 8.1 mail app (yahoo and bt addresses). For some reason the emails are not coming through. I can get them by going to the bt and yahoo websites but when I click on the mail app, it says "last updated 10 days ago" and that was the last time I had mail on there. There is a 'Sync' button but I think that just syncs different computers rather than syncs the app with my mail. What could have gone wrong?
