Good evening,
we have a Hewlett-Packard Photosmart C4280 printer, about 8 years old, always been reliable (moderate domestic use) but is now refusing to work, telling me there are paper jams, carriage jams and missing ink cartridges, when none of this true. In view of its age, should I cut my losses and simply replace it?
thanks for any comments

Put simply, YES!

Mine does that sometimes, it tells me I am using bootleg cartridges, which I'm not :-(

Thank you both. Because of my own advanced years, I am reluctant to put old servants out to grass, but needs must I suppose, my son tells me no-one will come to repair it. I will Freecycle the old thing, perhaps someone will be able to tinker it back to life.
my epson was doing that the other week , before replacing it try uninstalling and then reinstalling, worked for me and mine is an old one , also hubby gave it a blow out with the air line got rid of dust and such like . try it
I would also suggest that you clean the gold electrical contacts on both the cartridges and inside the printer with a small brush and methylated spirits as grease from the fingers can affect them.
Switch printer off when doing this and allow the meths to properly dry off.
Hope this helps.

Thank you all for helpful suggestions. I tried the re-installing technique, and have cleaned all the bits I could get at, but it is still sulking and telling lies, so I will bite the bullet and replace it. Thanks again.
Have you not HP Clean Up Green? if so use that to clean up your Printer, I would always look for a solution before getting shut, a home Printer does not do that much work unless you are printing all day! I doubt you do that do you? try taking out your paper & replacing the sheets, regards your Ink, have you replaced with new?
