Can I connect my android phone directly to a hard drive to transfer off all my video & photos? Or do I have to go via the laptop?

A laptop is (has) a hard drive. Just save them to where you know you can get them.

Install Google Drive on your PC, then install Google Drive on your phone.

Logon to both with your main gmail userid and password.

Now go to your Photo or Video on your phone and share it with Google Drive.

It will automatically be copied to your laptop in the Google Drive folder.

Now on your PC copy the picture out of your Google Drive folder into the folder you want to save it in (My Photos?).

Now you can delete it off your phone.

Do that with all your photos and videos
Well, what you can do is you can try taking help of various cloud storage services available or you can also use application like Airdroid to remotely transfer your device contents over to your PC/Laptop !
