How are you accessing them from a laptop?

If it's using an email client (such as Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail or Thunderbird) and that client is configured to use the default POP3 settings, accessing mail from your laptop will automatically delete those messages from the server, making them unavailable to other devices (such as your tablets). If the default POP3 settings have been changed to 'Leave mail on server for 3 days' then accessing mail from your laptop will mark those messages for removal after 3 days (but they'll still appear on your laptop because copies will have been downloaded there). Indeed, that seems to be the most likely cause of the problem.

So you either need to change the POP3 settings on your laptop's email client to 'leave mail on server indefinitely' or, better, change the settings to use IMAP, rather than POP3, in the same way that your tablets already do.

Thank you Buenchico,
We use MS Outlook.com for our hotmail.co.uk and live.co.uk emails.
Can you direct me to where I can change the settings?. Ive had a look but cant find anything that would enable me to make the changes, would it be in "Tools" somewhere?
I have an iPad and it used to do that to me. Himself changed something and now they stay for a month, I'd prefer them to stay forever. It's in settings, then mail, contacts and calendars.
If you're using Outlook.com (rather than the program called Outlook, which is totally different) you're using webmail not POP3 (or IMAP), so your mail is staying on the server anyway. So now I'm totally lost! I can only suggest using webmail on your tablets as well (i.e. open a web browser and log in at Outlook.com) instead of using the tablet's dedicated mail apps. Sorry!
Ethandron's post wasn't there when I started typing. It does indeed look as if there's something in the settings for the email apps that you're using that needs changing.
On your ipad if you go to settings, mail contacts calendars, My exchange account, Mail days to sync you can change the number of days to what you require.
The other way to view old emails on your ipad is by using safari to log into your account. You will need to delete your old emails via safari as they will use up memory space on your ipad.
No idea how to do this on a Android tablet but there will be a way similar to above.

Many thanks to all who have responded. I have changed the settings as described on the iPad. I cannot find a way to do similar on the Toshiba Excite AT10PE.

I don't give up easily!

See if this helps:

Go to Menu > Settings > Accounts & sync .

Access your email account details. Look for 'Amount to Synchronize' and change it from the default '3 days' setting to something better for you.
