When I tap the keys on my laptop characters don't always appear on the screen, I have hoovered the keyboard to clear the dust what else can I do ?

I have heard of your problem occurring from a worn-out battery causing interference with a laptop's electrical circuitry when plugged into a mains socket.

You could try the laptop plugged into a mains socket after having removed the battery.
