If the later DVD+R is superior to the earlier DVD-R disk, why do they continue to manufacture the latter?

Because some ancient decks can only use the -R standard, and some die-hards insist on buying them.

Sorry, only part of my post seems to have appeared.

I wondered where you got that information from, as it's simply not true.

The DVD-R format is the official format of the DVD Forum, the group that controls the specifications and licensing for the DVD logo

It was also true at some stage (it might not be now) that there were more devices world-wide that were -R compatible than +R
