Does anyone know how to shut down a btinternet email address. Mine has been hacked and someone is using it to send out malicious emails. All contacts have been deleted but still they go.

I know of someone with a BT address at which all contacts were sent scamming e-mails after the address book was compromised - I got one of the messages. I would suggest you alert BT to the matter but if the address book has been copied out of the system then closing down the address will only ensure you don't receive anything but all your contacts will still be possible targets indefinitely. The better course would be to discuss the settings of your filters with BT.
The first thing to do is to change the password. Do it now and don't use a name or a date of birth. The sooner you do taht the sooner it will stop.

Then contact BT I'll find you a contact link while you go change the password.
Ok, now you've changed your BT internet password, have a look at this link to the BT advice in compromised accounts.

Hope it helps.

Thank you Maydup. Changed the password ages ago and have taken a look at the recommended weblink. Limited value really but worth a look. They suggest inputting a bogus email address and then remove your own one but the bogus email address fails the verification so only complicates matters. Think I need to speak to BT and just get the address take down.

It happened to me in the way that methyl describes - BTinternet were on to it like a shot and contacted me to alert me, all I had to do was change my password to protect my account. I was impressed with the speed that it was sorted out. There were no "sent" items actually in my sent box, they were being sent, as methyl says, from another source.
I had this kind of trouble last year, so I change my password every month now. I'm not sure that BT emails are in any way more susceptible than any other though.
