"message Downloaded"?

I have a very cheap Nokia mobile that I purchased in India, every text I receive just says "message downloaded", so I cannot read them. Is this a settings thing or is it just a poor phone?

tamborine, as I said, it is a cheap, basic Nokia phone that doesn't do MMS.
