I have a paypal balance but I want to buy something using one of the attached cards on my account. Is there anyway I can tell paypal not to use the balance but take it off the card? I have read the help etc but it seems determined that I must use my paypal balance. Any ideas? Google threw up nothing useful.

It is up to the seller. Look at the listing, does it say that the seller will only accept payment by Paypal? Or does it say you can pay by paypal, cheque, card etc? If it does, select pay by card.
I once bought an item and I didn't have enough money in my paypal account, paypal took the balance left in my account to make part payment, and the rest came off my card. I just waited until the transaction was complete and then transferred some money back into my paypal account.

Nothing to do with the seller. It's paypal itself.
Surely the answer can be established from what has bee said by TW.

Pay further money into your paypal account. You could use your card to do it.

have either of you read what I wrote?

I want to preserve my paypal balance. So imagine I have £10 in paypa. Now I want to buy something for £30, Paypal wants to take the £10 from my balance and the other £20 from my credit cards. Rather than this, how do I inducePaypal to take the whole £30 from my credit card? That's what I'm asking, there appears to be no way on the face of it, I hoped that someone out there may have an idea.
You have to use the balance if there is one. There is no other option. When there is no balance you have option to choose debit card or credit card to pay for whatever.
Simple. If you have £10 in your paypal account and you wish that to remain after you spend £30, then pay £30 into your account from your card; before purchasing whatever you intend.

£10 plus £30 equals £40, minus £30 equals a balance remaining of £10.

Please correct me if my simple maths are incorrect.

yes and I'm charged interest on what is a cash transfer as opposed to the interest free period for purchases. Your arithmetic is impecable.
Do you have to use PayPal - could you not go to the seller direct, and just use your credit card to pay?
Just log out of paypal and proceed with the purchase. Once asked to pay by paypal just pay without logging on (using the card you wish).
I've had to do this method so many times it is unreal. Mainly because I've used my mums credit card.
TTT.....No need to be sarcastic.

Good thinking Boxtops.

What do you now say TTT; especially in the light of of what has been suggested by dizmouk.

When I say 'log out with paypal' I mean make sure you are not logged into paypal. I don't know how your paypal account is set up but mine requires a pin code sent to my phone everytime I log in. Once you have made the purchase (for example on ebay) you can then click to pay by paypal. This will direct you to the paypal login screen where you are asked to login. There will also be an option that allows you to pay without logging in. Something like "don't have an account, pay by card". I apologise for not knowing the exact message as I've not bought anything recently.
"Pay with my PayPal account
Log in to your account to complete the purchase"

"Pay with a debit or credit card(Optional)
Sign up to PayPal to make your next checkout faster"
Another reason for doing it that way is if you do not have credit cards linked to your paypal account. You may wish to pay for a purchase but don't have the time or patience to register that card with your account. I order all my Justeat.co.uk stuff that way :)

it's an ebay item, you cannot pay directly with a CC unless its listed as an option and it hardly ever is.

Alston I was only returning the favour.
What favour TTT.

Al.
TTT: Are you not prompted after purchasing the item to log into paypal to pay for the item?
Question Author
yes, but how do you use a CC after that? I know you can use th eones ou have declared to the site but you cannot use them or any others independent of the site.
As soon as you are redirected to loging to paypal, Don't. Just click on the link below saying to pay by card. You don't need to log in. Just make sure you have the credit card to hand and fill the details out manually.
You can use them independently because I have on many occasions. You can pay by an assigned card without logging in. It just means you have to fill in your details (address, post code etc and card details).
