Laptop Battery Does Not Detect Or Charge

I have a sony vaio laptop that only got second hand other day and has battery in it the correct one and correct power adapter..But the battery on icon botton right windows says 7 says battery not detected..it is not charging up either...But the laptop runs fine for hours hours no problem with mains adapter...so question if the battery has basically died on me whould it say cant detect it as mostly a dud battery still shows up on a laptop as detected doesn't it...please any help be great.as not sure if to purchase new battery or not..ive tried reinstalling windows as was on xp and haveven tried win 7 which on now all up to date but still has that same problem...so is it battery issus or something else...Please note laptop works fine though on mains just the battery doesn't charge or detects its there...tahnks in advance

Sony in their wisdom have in their genuine laptop batteries a chip that connects to the OS to enable the charging system and the charge indicator to work. If you don't use a genuine replacement battery then the situation you have will happen. Non genuine don't have the chip you have to purchase a genuine Sony battery.

to the best of my knowledge it is a genuine battery but does have some age to it...But if theyhave this chip then im guessing it will be the reason that the battery has had it so will get a new genuine one for it..many thanks for your help..
