I have an old out of contract and unlocked HTC smartphone that I would like to use as a backup/second phone however I do not want to enter into any contracts, is there a pay as you go smartphone sim that I can buy that does not require monthly top ups to keep it active, in other words I would like to start off with about £20 credit and not top up until it almost runs out.

asda tesco mobile both get excellent reviews
asda uses vodaphone network tesco uses 02 's
payg or contract
Chargable use is required for all accounts because the number is too valuable to be lost to the company. It must remain active. Terms & conditions apply.

Thanks for your answers, I looked at Tesco and Asda but they are both monthly top ups, as it will only be a "second or standby" phone I only want to buy a small amount of credit and use it until it has nearly run out, as Old_Gezzer said a Chargable use is required for all accounts so why is it that I have 2 ordinary sim cards for other mobile phones (tesco network) that have No monthly top up and keep the credit on them until it is used up?
All (?) PAYG type accounts need no regular monthly top up. But as agreed, do need occasional use.
I have Asda and it's not monthly, I top up as and when.
Check this out, a ONE OFF PAYMENT for the sim which I remember was £15 then its :-

150 minutes per month FREE
250 Text per month FREE
500 MB of Data per month FREE
The above renews each month on the anniversary date.

I have been with them for quiet a few months now and had no problems, they use the Vodafone network.
