I received a letter from O2 thanking me for my custom for taking out a 24 month contract for £37 per month. First I've heard of it. For £37 a month I'd expect a new phone for a start but all I have is a letter with an account number and an allocated phone number but no number you can call for enquiries. I went to the O2 web site and contacted someone via their instant messaging feature who finally passed me on to what he called their "fraud investigations" team. This looks like ID theft but I'm very careful like that. Anyone any idea or experience of this? I'm with Vodafone via my employer and would never entertain my own monthly contract. Thanks

if you haven't taken out an O2 contract, it sure sounds like a scam. It's not one of the ones I've had, though, and I can't find anything similar by googling.
Important!
Report the apparent ID theft here:
http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud
(either by using the online system or by calling the free number shown).

That will get you a police crime reference number. Without it, O2 might assume that it really was you that took out the contract and pursue you for the money. Once you can quote a crime reference number it should be clear to them that you're the victim of fraud.

Are you really sure that you've always shredded all of your utility bills, credit card statements, council tax bills, etc and not allowed just one of them to find its way into your recycling bin? It's all it takes!

Yes I shred everything with any of my details on it but obviously my name and address is out there in thousands of places. Most of my statements/bills etc are online now anyway so there is a minumum of actual paper. All this letter has of my personal info is a name and address.

Anyway thanks, I'll report it and get a crime number
