My wireless trackball has buttons on both the transmitter and receiver one can press to force a reconnect. May be worth looking to see if your mouse has them ?
If in doubt, read the instruction book.
Ah the light, that does sound a bit terminal though. That said was it a brand new battery ? I try to recharge my batteries and they don't always work.
My wireless mouse actually had an on/off switch underneath - you haven't accidentally hit that have you?
As Prudie says, look for a little on/off switch underneath, perhaps like this

I think one of mine even had the on/off switch *inside* the battery compartment.

the on /off button is on , there are no side buttons and as the mouse will be one year old this month I have probably slung the book out as I usually do.

Choose your mouse and see if any support is available.
We had a similar problem and cured it with this:

Luck!
Have you unplugged your little transmitter thingy and put it back in again. My mouse dies occasionally and this cures it.........
You could try reinstalling if you have the original CD.
Restart your computer with the mouse plugged in, see if this helps. Hope so.
It's a wireless mouse, society.
Any luck, Dee Sa?
