I have just run a couple of speedtests on my laptop (Acer Aspire 5315 on Vista) and I have had conflicting results.
Broadband Speedchecker gave me a download speed of 9.64 yet Speedtest.net only gave me a figure of 2.33.
Has anyone any idea why there should be such a wide difference

You should use the speed test that your ISP has as this what they go on if there is a speed issue. Contact your ISP and they will help you over the phone.
Maybe it is because their servers are busy or are there is congestion in the network (network congestion can and will affect your connection rate). To get accurate speed test results do a extended speed scan in http://www.scanmyspeed.com/ .
