Dvd Prog 1 No Play

Sony RDR-HXD890 HDD/DVD dubs to disc (hi-speed). Plays all progs except the 1st recording. 'Searching 1' appears on screen forever and the only button on the remote that works is 'eject'. I know the recording is there cos it plays on my laptop, though very reluctantly. I'm using DVD+RW and the only time it didn't happen was when the recording was not 'hi-speed dub'. But the machine decides dub speed not me. Any ideas?
