I assume that you're using Gmail via its website. (You can also configure email clients, such as Outlook Express, to work with Gmail).

Then I get confused! Clicking on an email address in a webpage is meant to open your default email client (such as Outlook Express) so, if you're actually clicking on the email address of a person you want to reply to, I'm unsurprised that it's happening. You should be using the 'Reply' option, as described here:

So what is it that you're actually clicking on?

Thanks for the answer Buenchico, I guess I did not explain very well, when I look at various websites they normally have a "contact us" link to click on, when I do this my email opens in outlook express instead of gmail as it used to, you are correct that I use gmail through Google, all I want to do is to make gmail my default email so how is that done?
You need to install the Gmail notifier. This will act as a default e-mail client and take you to your Gmail account on the web.

Thanks rojash, it seems for some reason the gmail notifier that I had has been uninstalled, I just re-installed it using your link and "bingo" it now works as it used to!!
