What Are The Effects Of Restoring A Laptop To Factory Settings?

My laptop's had a spring clean (by someone I trust, and everything previously on it was backed up to an external hard drive beforehand), but it's been restored to factory settings.

This is a bit of a slog as it now means things like the clock need manually resetting. So, for example, I spent an hour this morning hunting for the @ symbol- which kept coming out as " - before I realised the keyboard had reverted to US settings, then working out how to adjust it.

It's now running on Windows 7 Ultimate. Is there a crib sheet anywhere that lists all the things I need to reset manually? I ask as I'd rather do this systematically than spend time bumping into things.

Hope that's enough information and grateful for any assistance. Tia.

well for a start your clock should reset to correct time when your on the "net" unless your comp COS battery is on the blink

I'm sure it would have done deggers, except it was set to a US time zone.
I have recently given to a niece a Dell laptop which I restored to factory settings. It required about two hours for Windows Vista to download more than two hundred up-dates.

Perhaps I am wrong but, as you have now reset the clock and keyboard to UK requirements, I see nothing further you need do; apart from re-loading any programmes which you feel are worthwhile having installed. I would certainly recommend that you download Microsoft Security Essentials as an Anti Virus programme and which is absolutely free of any cost.

There is so much wrong here it's hard to know where to start!, but the main thing I've got to say about this is, Stop trusting that person.

"It's now running on Windows 7 Ultimate"

Errrm, if it wasn't running that before then it's not been restored to factory settings, they've installed a new operating system (do you have a legit license for it, if not they're causing you to break the law and probably charging you for it!)

By the sounds of it they've done a crap job of installing illegal software on your computer.

No no Chuck that's me being a thicko, sorry.

I was using Vista before, which we have at home -kosher. This is also legitimate software from work and my laptop has a full and proper licence to use it.
If the software came from work, the laptop would not be reset to factory settings. I'm surprised the code worked on it.

There is no set task sheet as everyone will want to personalise their OS to their own liking. Perhaps you could make your own sheet as you go along so it will be next time.
