Hi,

I'm wondering if theres is a way to get wi-fi with no land line. Basically my son lives with my ex, they have no landline phone. Was wondering if you can get wi-fi without one, for using a tablet PC.

Many thanks

My BlackBerry phone has a wifi capability which works very well. Check your smartphones.
Re link to Amazon web site for USB adapters.

But many tablets dont have USB slots.
..and in any case those adaptors are for connecting to a wifi router, which the OP says they don't have.
Hi gang, I haven't got a landline either so I use Wi-fi in the pub. If I buy one of these dongles from amazon, can I just plug it into my netbook and/or my pc, can I get the internet? What about cost?
If I buy a dongle from amazon, can I plug it into my netbook/pc and get the internet? How much does it cost, how do you pay for it?
Are you sure there's no BTOpenZone or BTFON network where they live...?
My internet access is via a dongle from 3 mobile which I just plug in and it connects to the phone network.

Also some smartphones, e.g. Samsung Galaxy S3, let you use them as a wireless access point for other devices but this wouldn't be practical for full-time use.

Don't they still need a landline phone though? confused... sorry!
I have a dongle and just use it when I stay with a friend. You don't need a landline.
How much does access cost with a dongle? I've seen ones where you have to load it with credit.
I have a dongle for my work laptop, you don't need an adjacent landline.
I purchased mine some time ago through T Mobile. You can top up online or by buying a top up card through a T mobile shop. When you want to use it, you go into your T Mobile account and purchase a day from your balance. You can purchase a 'day' amount or buy 2 days and get one free, or 7 days. It has to be used within 30 days. You have to use (go online) at least once in 6 months otherwise you lose any balance and have to start again by buying a top up. I have a feeling the charge for 2 days was £7 plus the day free but a while since I used.
furrypusscat, the dongle needs a usb port to connect to. Not all tablets have a usb port.

Chucks link is the one you want, scooby. It connects to the internet in the same way as mobile phones, no land line needed.
Hi, sorry I was answering Tubbycoates questions re cost of dongle etc.
Thanks eveybody.
To have a WiFi connection someone has to be connected to the Internet either via a phone line or a cable. Unless your neighbours are happy to allow you to use theirs, which is unlikely, then you need to provide your own, landline or cable connection, to plug your WiFi router into.

Out in the big world some commercial establishments allow you to connect, either for "free" or for a fee.
Not used thse Internet dongles but they will be doing the router's job and connecting to someone's network. Mobile providers' networks by the look of it. I find it difficult to believe that would be a one off expense for connection evermore though. Don't you have to regularly pay the mobile provider ?
Sorry furry, I should have read the whole thread first. :-O
