Emails not being displayed on HTC wildfire

Hi, I have had my email account set up on my phone for about 18 months with no problems, then yesterday it was still displaying the notifications for the emails, but when I opened my mailbox, it said it had been updated at the time of opening it, but there were no new emails visible. Anyone got any ideas what I need to do to rectify this please, I have tried turning the phone off, leaving it for a while, then turning it back on, I have also gone into the manage apps section and cleared the cache, which didn't seem to have any effect at all.
