Depends on the site you are using
If you are in the UK and you are sending the message to a UK Phone then it does not cost anymore to send a text to them if they are abroad or in the UK. Even if the phone is not a UK Phone a text message is still only about 15p depending upon who your provider is.
The recipient of a text message pays nothing. It is only phone calls when abroad that cost both parties.
On a similar note, does anyone know how much it costs to send a text from a UK mobile number in Greece to a mobile in the UK on the same provider (Vodafone PAYG)?
if the person in spain can install Skype on his phone that would be a free way of doing it.
^ assuming they are using a free wi-fi connection, otherwise they'd get roaming charges for data, which could be even more expensive.
Ratter, that's not strictly true. The person using their mobile to use skype would probably get charged a lot for data roaming. Skype works using the internet after all. Unless they've sorted themselves out a decent abroad package with their network then that could end up pretty costly.
Thanks Rojash. However, I don't think it really answers my question. I have in mind "roaming charges" which, I think, means a hefty premium over and above the standard charge for a text message. Am I right? And if so can you give me an idea as to how much a single text message sent from my Vodafone mobile in Greece to my mum in the UK would cost (both of us on Vodafone PAYG).
Thanks again

As it says in the link rojash provided.
Im kinda assuming the OP is online at home, in that case he wouldn't be charged any extra for sending a message via Skype?
The OP wouldn't but the recipient might.
Thanks Chuck (and Rojash!).
It would have helped if I'd read the right section in R's link!
Im fairly sure there are no charges either way, I work with a few foreign girls that keep in touch with their families at home free through skype.
It's the use of the internet on the recipients mobile phone (being an English phone in another country) that will incur the cost.
"Thanks Rojash. However, I don't think it really answers my question."
I love when you post an answer that precisely answers the question, and the OP just can't be @rsed to read it, but decides it's not correct.
Sorry Rojash!
I did apologise for not reading the appropriate part of your link!
Thanks again for your assistance.
