I have a DTR. I just go to the channel guide, select the programme being shown and press record. Without a DTR I don't think it can be done.

To the best of my knowledge, most (all?) modern recording devices (DVD recorders, PVRs, etc) provide an 'instant record' button.

unlike VHS recorders there are many DVD players which play only which is probably whats causing the confusion, there are DVD recorders (some with hard drives)which is what you really need.
