Issue with deleting files on USB stick

Evening all,
Any help on the below would be appreciated:
My Dad tried to delete a file on a USB stick. It came up with the error message: Can not delete file or folder 'Catalog' the directory is not empty. Did a Google search and found a site which suggested going to: Run and entering command 'CHKDSK /F E:'
Did this and thought nothing had happened, but now when I check the USB stick it says 'The disc in drive E is not formatted'. If I ask it to format it says 'Windows was unable to complete the format'
What did I do? and can it be rectified?
Fortunately Dad does not need any of the files on the stick, so if they are wiped it's not a problem, but is the stick still usable?
Many thanks.

Sound like it has gone to meet it's maker to me.
You could try a disk repair app on it, but I don't think you'll get much luck with a memory stick, to be honest.
If you can't format it, then no it's not usable.

Try on another computer before binning it though.
