been offered a compaq laptop for £65. It looks OK but is quite slow. Its running an Athlon 2400 cpu and only has 40gb of hard drive space.

Theres not alot on the hard drive other than the o/s (XP) so I dont think its slow due to software. Theres only 192mb of RAM - way too little for surfing the net etc.

How much would it cost to get a shop to stick 2gb of RAM in it? I've never worked on a laptop before so not sure how easy it is to DIY.

You need to check the maximum RAM that can go in the laptop.

Most laptops only have two slots, and if it is an old laptop it may be the maximum is 512Mb or 1Gb or whatever, so you need to check that first.

well we've upgraded that to 1gb, just hope that'll be enough for general use, web surfing, itunes etc.
