Window swapping!

Internet explorer and Vista. With these one can have open a number of Windows, which is excellent. However, if anything comes up on any of those Windows the machine leaves the Window I am viewing and goes to the one which has changed. EG. If I am on here and a Chatroom if someone posts a message in the Chatroom then it flashes to there. Can I stop this happening?
