is it safe to open mail that has been diverted to my junk mail box, as long as i do not reply to it or click on a link.thank you..

Yes, it is safe to open the mail which has been diverted to the junk mailbox because this is happening because of the large size of the mail.
Yes. AS you said; never reply or click a link, no matter how tempting it may be. The mail that goes to your junkmail folder depends on your filter settings and your ISP's filter.

Most often it is rubbish advertising, spam and scams tagged by you ISP or webmail service. If you subscribe to forums and have your settings set to receive all contributions, it will often end up in your junk folder because of the repetitive nature of the mail sender. You can usually set your mail client to accept mail from certain senders, whatever it is.
Yes it is safe until you don’t open it or reply to unknown to you. If you Know Him then you can open the mail.
But take care it is not a spam mail. So use filter setting in your mail you use.
