Hi,

I am using VMware at home to create a small environment. A DC and a couple of application servers and a desktop. They have bridged network connections so that they can use the iternet through my sky router. The problem I have is DNS. The sky router is the DNS server for getting out into the internet but in order to add my servers into my domain I need to make my DC a dns server as well. I have played with the settings but I get this response when I try and join anything into my domain.

Note: This information is intended for a network administrator. If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\Windows\debug\dcdiag.txt.

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate an Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for domain "DINGDANGDOO.com":

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.DINGDANGDOO.com

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS SRV records required to locate a AD DC for the domain are not registered in DNS. These records are registered with a DNS server automatically when a AD DC is added to a domain. They are updated by the AD DC at set intervals. This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses:

192.168.0.1
192.168.0.15

- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:

DINGDANGDOO.com
com
. (the root zone)

Any ideas, please

Isn't it simply a matter of making the domain controller dual-homed?
I can't see why you'd need to use the DNS service on the router for the whole LAN, as long as the DHCP is allocating the router as the gateway it should work fine if you disable the DNS service on the router and use the DCs DNS service. for ease I'd put DHCP on the DC too rather than the router.

I did think maybe a solution was to add another nic, set one up to talk to sky and thus external and the other just to talk to the vm's internally. I don't really get the issue if I am honest as I can ping the dc by name from my client it's just when I join to domain I get this this issue.
The error tells you why it's not working, it needs the correct service records in the DNS and your router won't support SRV records.

I still can't see why you can't simply set all the domain computers to use the DC for DNS and just use the router as a gateway.
