Dark smudge-like line on an LCD screen

I've noticed a dark, smudge-like line appearing on my Panasonic Viera LCD screen. The line appears and becomes more noticeable when the set has been on for a while (maybe half an hour or so), and it stretches further across the screen the longer the viewing session. It isn't particularly distracting (just a bit annoying) but I would like to know if anyone knows what causes it, and whether it can be got rid of. I reckon the screen is about 4 years old.

i'd try to return it and get another one, sounds like there is something wrong with it that isnt very fixable, i had the same thing with my old TV screen, but it was a purple patch on one side, they said that you cant fix it and that you just have to get a new one
