XP boot problem

Running XP SP3 home edition and for the past two days Windows starts loading (I get the initial Windows screen up) then I get a black screen which just stays there.

I can boot into safe mode with no problems, I can boot into Ubuntu (which is on the same disk) with no problem. Running chkdsk /r solved the problem yesterday, but I'm back to the black screen again this morning. Oh and Windows appeared to shut down normally last night.

Has anyone any ideas what the problem might be ? Or even where Windows hides the logs from chkdsk so that I can find out what, if anything, it found wrong ?

Sorry, forgot to add that I installed a new sound card on Saturday, but the machine booted properly on Sunday morning.
Remove the sound card.
Check that it boots OK
Go to the manufacturer's web site and get latest drivers fro sound card.
Reinstall sound card
Reboot and install the downloaded drivers.
