When I finish a session on my laptop I note the amount left on the battery, when I again
use the laptop approx 24 hours later I find the battery life is considerably lower sometimes requiring a charge. What is the cause and is there a cure ?. The laptop
is a Sony vaio and is approx 2 years old.

Are you actually shutting down or just closing it so it sleeps? It is still using power while it sleeps I think.

Thank you postdog, I go thro what I believe is a complete shutdown as opposed to
sleep, I will double check the next time I shut down
It's perfectly normal for a laptop to use some battery when it's off (over and above the normal discharge rate of a battery even if it was disconnected from the laptop)

When you switch a laptop off some parts of the system are kept live so it's knows when you've pressed the power switch otherwise it would never turn back on again.

Hello Postdog, I checked the settings for the battery and found it set
to sleep when switching off, I altered the settings to shut down when switching off
but this has made no difference to battery discharge. I am therefore inclined to
accept the suggestion offered by ChuckFickens. Thank you both for your input.
