Kindle and Pictures in downloaded books

I'm still very new to Kindle so be patient! I downloaded a book of verse (free) from Amazon and although it displays the poems properly, where the pictures/drawings should be, the word "illustration" appears. Is there some setting I need to change or is it cos it was a free book and you don't get the complete version???

I don't have one - I use a small tablet instead - but I have friends who do.
Kindle will show pictures (in B&W only) but it depends on the publisher including them in the correct format. I'm also told that large images will sometimes not load correctly for no known reason.
