how to close apple mac mailbox

ive been having trouble sending an email which includes a pic from ipics on my apple macbook pro. the email hasnt sent and now when i click on the mail icon at the bottom saying i have 29 messages i doesnt do anything. when i try and log off the computer totally ie shut down it says i have to log out of mail first which i cant seem to do. any ideas what i must do please?

Right click on the mail identifier on the header bar and choose "force shutdown"

where is the mail identifier woofgang? can see an icon at the bottom saying 29 messages and then there is a list of things at very top of screen saying safari, file, edit view etc going across.
Try clicking on the Apple icon and go down to Force Quit, you should get a list of all applications open, and click on Mail, which should close it.
