I have a laptop running Vista Home Premium. When I turned it on today it is saying Configuring Updates do not turn off. It gets as far as 98% then says shuting down, which it does, but when it restarts itself it's back to configuring Updates and reaches 98% again before turning off.

In simple terms What can I do please?

I've Googled and found this:-

Restart computer.press f8 then choose option restore computer.
choose option open command.
type: prompt winsxs (press enter)
type: move C:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml text.xml (press enter)
type: exit and restart computer.
Computer should be working again.

I'm pleased to say it worked.
Try booting into Safe Mode (by pressing F8 as you start the laptop). If you can get into Windows that way your screen will probably look very odd (because the graphics driver won't have loaded) but you'll still be able to run System Restore, to take your registry back a few days. The instructions are here:

If you can't get into Safe Mode (and you've got the Windows Vista disk) follow these instructions instead:

Oops.
Crossed posts.
At least you've fixed the problem anyway.

Thanks for your reply Chris. I have to admit I had tried Safe Mode and was pulling my hair out as nothing appeared to work. When I Googled it would appear I wasn't the only one having problems in Safe Mode.

At least it is sorted now - thanks again.
