it says you cant format this volume as it contains a version of windows that you are using

Yep, you can't format the drive you are currently running your system from.

If you want to format the system drive you need to boot the computer from something like the windows CD and then you'll be able to format it.
Or go into DOS eh chuck?
If you can find a DOS boot disk these days then yes (though you could only format it in FAT32 then)
The question is why do you want to format the disk?

If you want to reinstall Windows on it then you can do a format during the Windows install.

If you do a format you lose EVERYTHING off it.
