I am running xp pro and booted up, (computer was working fine previously) all the hard drives etc are detected, no problems with anything there, then the screen goes grey and i wait for the user screen, but the screen just stays grey and the red light on the tower is constantly red, no flashing at all. I rebooted and tried to start in safe mode, got to the screen that says start in safe mode (i am attempting to do a system restore) but again the next thing that happens is constant red light and grey screen, any sensible suggestions on this problem - could it be a loose cable problem?, computer sounds fine when starting up and as it is finding all drives etc i am at a bit of loss as to what to do as i cant get past this grey screen, therefore cannot mend whatever the problem is, many thanks for anyones help on this.

sounds like your hard drive might of failed to test this put your windows disc in cd/dvd drive and boot to it you can attempt a system restore /repair from there and this should tell you if you have a hard drive problem.

hope this helps. garfield
