Computer going slow or broadband going slow?

There is a difference.
"any suggestions apart from throwing the computer through the window"
I've tried that myself. It doesn't help...

hi its the computer going slow
Have you tried a disc clean-up or defrag?
Question Author
hi ive now done a disc clean and defrag but its still the same :(
I would check for malware with "malwareBytes" free edtion.
Also do a full anti virus scan, if everything is ok, download "ccleaner" and just leave the default items checked....also run disk cleanup and click on the "more options tab and delete all system restore points....

A sudden slowness in your computer could indicate malware or a virus
Are you sure it is not running the weekly virus check as this slows things to a crawl.
Press ctrl, shift + esc , this opens task manager, click on the processes tab.
This will tell you if there are any processes eating up your cpu....

Think back to what you might have downloaded and installed

hi done a full virus scan etc and installed and run ccleaner, seems to be a bit, quicker at opening up a page but still slow to open links.
Installed/updated any add-ons/extensions recently? Some of those can be play up when there is a compatibility conflict between them.
Question Author
yes recently updated avg
i meant add-ons for your internet browser since it would seem to be a problem affecting that, but there can be conflicts amongst other software that causes trouble, particularly between firewall and anti-virus software, though that's not necessarily what's causing your problem.
Click on the the start tab, then click accessories, then system tools.
There should be an option there to "run IE with no add-ons" and just see if there an improvment, it there is, we will have to find out what add-on is causing the problem.

If no improvment i would download (MBAM) malwarebytes...

Just close and open the browser again to reture to normal

At least this will eliminate if its an add-on causing the problem....
Another suggestion, if you also have firefox try it on that to see if you stll have the same problem.

Does the slowness settle down after a while, when you start the computer up
(ie..it goes ok after a few minites...or is it constant all the time...

Anyway here's a download to malwarebytes
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

And here's a quick install and set-up guide
The important thing here is .. make sure you have "update MalwareBytes" checked before it finishes setup, it usually is by default

Here is a brief install and use guide

I have had a similar problem recently and it started right after the AVG update, it seems there is some problem with the AVG update and running Zone Alarm together. I unistalled AVG9 and did a reinstall, but the problem is still there, so until I find a suitable alternative to AVG, I have uninstalled it and reinstalled the previous version, I know it is older, but is better than nothing until as I say I have found an alternative.
A very good and recommended alternative is avast 5.0 free....
Its database is updated every time you start your computer up...

I did here there was problems last year with AVG
