Calendar Question in Vista

Hello, all,

Can you tell me if there's a way of getting the calendar in Vista to alert me by sound and/or vision of upcoming events? I can put appointments, reminders in for dates in the future, but can't see any way of getting the calendar to make me aware, say, a day or couple of hours in advance of them. Have I missed something, or is there another way of reminding myself of upcoming events (other than having the calendar permanently open)? Thanks in advance.
