Full stop has appeared in address bar

A full-stop has suddenly appeared at the beginning of the address bar and also in search bars on several sites. This is very annoying and i have no idea why it has happened or how to get rid of the dratted thing. I have to delete it every time as in some searches I am looking for a subject not a web site. Any ideas please? Thanks.
