What file type is your non-image file?
If it's a text file the simplest way may be to turn it into a .pdf. No need for graphic converter. Select the file and then print from the file menu. When the print window opens click the pdf button bottom left and save as pdf,or save pdf to iPhoto.

Thanks for the reply but it isn't the text files I want to convert but picture files I have taken from screen shots. Any other suggestions will be very welcomed.

Many thanks,
But if it's a screenshot, it is an image file.

The easiest thing to do is open the image, then click file->save as, and choose the new type you want it saved as from a list in the bottom of that dialog box.
Fo3nix is right
If you are running OS 10.3 or earlier it will be a .pdf
!0.4 or later puts out either .png or .jpg. All 3 of these are as Fo3 says, image files

Thanks again for your answers. The form that these screenshots take are just as ordinary non-graphic files and what I was hoping to discover is what steps I should take to convert them into picture files so that I can see what picture they are before I click on them to open them. At the moment they are just white with a graphic insignia in the centre and the word 'TIFF'. I changed some other similar files to pictures by accident once but I can't for the life of me remember how I did it. A bit 'Duh' I know but any help will be gratefully received to put me out of my misery.
Ah I understand now.

What you're talking about are the icons in Finder windows.

Some pictures will show up in the icons themselves, so you don't have to double-click them to open. Or if you use 10.5 Leopard, you can press the space bar to get a quick preview of the image.

I've just checked, and Leopard has support for showing tiff files in icons.

Do the following for me:

Click Apple logo top-left of screen, then 'about this mac'. What version does it say?

Hi, It says Mac OSX 10.4.11
OK.

I have 10.5.x, and can't remember if tiff images would preview in the icons in 10.4.x. So really, I think your option is to simple open them in Preview, and then do file->save as, and choose jpeg type. This should preview in the icon.

Thanks for the information and advice but, so far, it hasn''t quite worked. I suspect it must have something to do with the Graphic Converter itself but I haven't been able to work-out exactly what.

Thanks for the advice though. It is really appreciated and should you stumble on the answer at any time in the future, then I would really appreciate it if you could drop me another line via this thread.....

Many thanks! : )

Thanks for the info but that wasn't exactly what I was asking about. I just want to know how to turn a 'tiff' file into a graphic picture which shows up as a thumbnail pic rather than a simple tiff file. Would you know anything about that?

Thanks.
