My DVD Drive only reads CD's not reads DVD why?

The drive is probably on its way out.

It's normal for combo drives that one side of it fails before the other does.
Are you sure it *IS* a DVD drive (has it read them before)?

If it is an older PC or laptop it may be a CD only drive.

It is a Sony DVD writer. It is a eight month old.
Now it is only reads CD. Should I replace it?
If it is only 8 months old, and it does not work any more, then exercise your rights under the Sale of Goods Act, and get the retailer to either repair it, or replace it with one that does work.
