The output from a laptop isn't directly compatible with the input to a TV. You need a suitable gizmo, such as this one, to convert the signal:

Chris - is that gizmo necessary even if the laptop has 'tv out'?
look for a s video connector on your laptop, most home ones have them now.. it will look like this (might be yellow)

If you have one of those your lappy is already equipped to output to a TV and you just need the correct (cheap) leads

Ethel: To be honest, I'm not sure.

Theoretically a 'TV out' socket should require nothing more than a suitable cable to connect it to a TV's Scart socket (or phono inputs), with the TV switched to 'AV' (rather than to any numbered channel). However, I wouldn't be at all surprised if this didn't actually work.

whoa.... extreme closeup on that pic!!

Chris, it does work, very well.

I have one laptop permanently connected to my tv (and stereo) this way to use for playing music, films videos, or stuff like iPlayer, (the laptop screen is turned of and I "remote" into it to control it.
