Thankyou Ethel,I will try it.

Thanks for your help much appreciated.
Mine seems to read 275.....does that make sense. BT charge me 15 pmonth (all in)....is that a good deal?
You are getting just under 3mb then - what are you paying for?
Question Author
terambulan,I have a Sky package which incorparates Television,Telephone and Broadband.

There are loads of deals out there,go on line and type in Broafdband deals but be careful when you look find out the price of the deal how long you have to sign up to,you just can't come out when you feel your not getting a good deal you sign up for a year or 18 months.

And remember to get your Mac-code you need this when you change from one ISP to another.
Have 1y contract with BT so cant move.
heck I got 6meg (smiles smugley)

the thing is dodd that there are so many reasons why you get whatever you get.
distance from exchange
state of your internal wiring
microwaves, TV, washer etc with a noisy powersupply
If WiFi connected - neighbours setups
flourescents (inc energy saving bulbs)

the number of people in your area with broadband
(high contention ratio)
While you are running the tests ... get your neighbours to do the same and see what they get

the most valid test you can do is using an ethernet cable
connection to the router/modem
connected to the point where the wires come into the building - with everything else disconnected ...

tera - you should have two figures - up and down
(something like 1234 & 123)

Thankyou ACtheTROLL,seems complicated just to find my speed.
Isn't there another way of finding out ie telephoning the telephone exchange would't they tell me?????????.

Thankyou for your help much appreciated.
unfortunately not

they supply UPTO whatever it is you pay for
guaranteed 8Mb requires 8 seperate lines (and costs a mint)
but by the time it gets to your house
(I live less than 1Km from my exchange ... I completely rewired my house with hi-grade telephony and cat 5

and 2 meg has still "evaporated" on the way.
other factors are time of day ... and of course the speed (and popularity) of the other end.

Two machines on my lan will transfer big files faster than lots of little ones - a to b is faster than b to a

and there are good reasons for all of it.

it's partly ISP's fault ... but also some of it is just how it is
Question Author
