Is it Window98? If so don't worry about it because it is typical and can't be fixed.

its xp
the problem is that shutdown problems are a real pig to diagnose even with access to the computer, I personally wouldn't even want to start trying to suggest things.

Sorry, maybe somebody else will come along with a better answer.
I also have Windows xp and also cannot shut it down, so I leave it on 24/7, and if I have to close, then I just unplug it.

thanks for answers............... fingers crossed i think i may have sorted it by taking corel out of the computer as it was never used anyway............ just read a few things on google and they all said corel caused probs so i got rid of it
thanks again
I have the same problem on one PC running XP home, but when I use Ubuntu/knoppix on that machine, it does switch off properly. The other PC running XP pro, does turn off though, so my guess is that it's something in XP home which is causing the problem. I got fed up with trying to find a solution and got into the habit of switching the machine off at the mains.
