DVD Error Codes

I just purchased a DVD boxset from eBay, but to my utter disappointment, I have discovered that three of the 24 discs do not play at all. (There are probably more but I've been too upset to go through them all.) Anyway, it's a supposedly new boxset and all of the discs look clean and don't have any scratches, but I have been getting the following code when I try to play some of them: Error Code - 89020003 - "The DVD disc might have been damaged so as to inhibit playback operation." But the strange thing is, I was able to play one of the discs on my laptop, although it didn't play all the way through and kept freezing up or going through each frame in a jerky way or stopping altogether., but at least my laptop was able to read the disc whilst my PC apparently could not.

Any ideas?

Sometimes get this with certain DVD-R discs using PowerDVD. Try using vlc as an alternative (free) mediaplayer.

Thanks! I already have VLC installed on my computer and use it for my movie downloads and to get around regional codes. I've tried it on these seemingly corrupted discs and it didn't work, but I'll give it another go.

Tried the VLC thing again and it worked for about two minutes, but then stopped playing the DVD. I started all over from scratch, taking the DVD out, reloading it, etc., but no luck. It's almost as if the VLC player decided it didn't like the disc and is refusing to play nice. Any other suggestions, although I have to admit that VLC really is a very cool piece of software when it works.

Is this a genuine set as you would buy from the High Street?

If so,ask the seller for a refund - you are entitled to one. If it isn't forthcoming and you paid by PayPal you can claim through them.

If it's a pirate, not much you can do except report the seller to the relevant bodies.

No, I didn't buy it from a High street shop but via eBay, and even though it was sold as an "original" set and was wrapped in plastic, the shipping address was Shanghai and the actual discs looked suspiciously fake. I have indeed filed a complaint with PayPal and eBay. Guess I'll just have to hope for a refund.
