The screen on our laptop has gone a bit strange. the screen has gone black but the icons and screen saver picture can be seen if you look at the screen at a certain angle. It's only the outlines you can see and the cursor can be picked out if you look really carefully. Have I pressed something or is there a major problem?? Anyone??? Oh, its an HP omnibook XE4500.

You have turned the screen display off - a power saving method. Alternatively, you have put it into 'display out' mode - where you connect your laptop to an external monitor.

My laptop is an Acer but the key is F6 with FN. The F6 key as a picture of two screens, one black and one white.
ethel may be right .... but if you can see the desktop .....
is it a "ghost" image ... or a real image?

in my experience - normally with powersave the screen is completely blank

if you can see a real desktop - my guess is that the backlight has gone.

you might be lucky and it's just the lead that's loose (you still need to open the machine up)

otherwise ... it'll cost 100.00+ for a new screen (probably wiser to get a flat screen monitor (with TV would be perfect - at least then you can use it when the lappy isn't in use)

strangely a 19" costs less (123.00)

unless you need the "laptopability" of being able to carry the thing about
